
The creation of life on Earth
Around 4.5 billion years ago, Earth emerged from a swirling cloud of gas and dust, forming a molten sphere, with temperatures soaring far beyond what we could imagine today. As it cooled, Earth began to solidify, forming a thin crust. Volcanic activity was rampant, and the planet’s surface was dominated by oceans of molten rock.
The Primordial Soup
Around 4.3 billion years ago, as the Earth’s surface began to cool, water vapour in the atmosphere condensed into liquid, giving rise to our first oceans. This emergence of liquid water marked a pivotal turning point. Popularly termed the Primordial Soup, it provided a nurturing environment for the formation of simple organic molecules, the building blocks of life.

The First Signs of Life
Around 3.5 billion years ago, the first signs of life appeared. These early life forms were likely simple, single-celled organisms, adapted to extreme environments like ocean hydrothermal vents. They thrived in conditions we would consider inhospitable, demonstrating life’s astonishing adaptability and resilience.
The creation of Oxygen
Around 2.4 billion years ago a momentous event known as the “Great Oxygenation Event” occurred. Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, developed the ability to perform photosynthesis, producing oxygen as a by-product. This oxygen began to accumulate in the atmosphere, creating an oxygen-rich environment. This had a profound impact on Earth’s evolutionary trajectory. It paved the way for more complex life forms, as aerobic respiration became possible, which provided organisms with a far more efficient way to extract energy from their environment.
The Ediacaran Period
Around 635 million years ago, Earth was a vastly different place. The surface was characterized by shallow oceans with complex life emerging. During the Ediacaran period, a wide array of exotic organisms, including the Ediacaran biota, inhabited the oceans. These creatures displayed unique body forms, unlike anything seen in later periods.

The Cambrian explosion
Around 541 million years ago a dramatic episode known as the Cambrian Explosion began. During this period. The pace of evolution accelerated significantly. Leading to the emergence of a stunning variety of multicellular organisms, many with hard shells and complex body structures. This rapid diversification of life forms would see the appearance of animals with hard exoskeletons, eyes, and complex limbs, allowing them to exploit new ecological niches, triggering an evolutionary race.
